First Sergeant John D. Dober Company First Sergeant, Alpha Company

First Sergeant John D. Dober was born in 1968 in Athens, Georgia. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 1999. Upon completion of recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina he was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class. He attended the School of Infantry at Camp Geiger, North Carolina and earned the MOS of 0311 Rifleman.


In May 2000, PFC Dober reported to 2d Battalion 2d Marines, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for duty with 2d Platoon, Echo Company. While serving with 2d Battalion 2d Marines, he was meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal in September 2000 while deployed with Battalion Landing Team 2/2, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) aboard the USS Ashland.


Lance Corporal Dober was promoted to Corporal in August 2001.  Corporal Dober attended Infantry Squad Leaders Course in February 2002.


In August 2002 Corporal Dober deployed with Battalion Landing Team 2/2, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) aboard the USS Tortuga.  While underway, Corporal Dober attended Corporal’s Course where he was the Honor Graduate.  Upon completion of Operation Dynamic Response (Kosovo) and Operation Desert Sentry, Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa (Djibouti) Corporal Dober was promoted to Sergeant in February 2003.  Sergeant Dober then conducted combat operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom I.


In January 2004, Sergeant Dober attended Basic Recruiters Course in San Diego, California.  Subsequently, Sergeant Dober was assigned to Recruiting Station Albany, New York where he earned Recruiter of the Year in 2005 and again in 2006.  He was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant in January 2006. 


In January 2007, Staff Sergeant Dober attended Light Armored Reconnaissance Leaders Course at Camp Pendleton, California.  He was then assigned to 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. In May 2007, he was assigned to the Urban Warfare Training Center at Twentynine Palms, California where he was the SNCOIC of the Role Player Section.  Upon returning to 2d LAR Battalion, he deployed for combat operations in Operation Iraqi Freedom 08-1 from March-October 2008 where he served as 1st Platoon Commander, Company C.  Staff Sergeant Dober deployed with 2d LAR Battalion for combat operations in Afghanistan from May-November 2009 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Operation Kanjari as part of Task Force Leatherneck, 2d Marine Expeditionary Brigade.  While deployed he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant.


From April-June 2010 Gunnery Sergeant Dober attended Marine Combat Instructor School. From 2010 to 2013 he served as the Chief Instructor of the Infantry Assaultman Leader/Infantry Anti-Tank Missileman Leader Courses, Advanced Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry-East.


Gunnery Sergeant Dober was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant in April of 2013 and assigned as the Headquarters Company First Sergeant at Marine Corps Communication-Electronics School.


He currently serves with the Ground Combat Element-Integrated Task Force.


His personal decorations include: The Navy Commendation Medal (2nd   Award) with Combat “V,” Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5th Award), Combat Action Ribbon (2nd Award).
